EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY
• I believe that the function of education is the development of the whole person taking into account intellectual, creative, social, cultural, physical, moral and emotional well-being.
• The outcome of any proramme of study should be the highest level of which a student is capable.
• The needs of learners and their learning are very important. The dignity and uniqueness of a learner should be valued.
• When a person's self esteem is good, learning potential is very likely to be achieved.
• The whole person is being educated, therefore, the administration should demonstrate a broad view of education in its curriculum and challenge each learner to become a life long learner. A successful learning institution will provide an environment for this to occur.
• As a teacher, I aim to build upon the base of intellectual knowledge, skills, cultural values and experience that each person brings by implementing a programme that caters to varied learning styles and needs; is challenging, equitable and acknowledges cultural heritage.
• I believe that classrooms should be safe, caring and stimulating environments where learning flourishes.
• I support open door policies and believe that the responsibility of teachers for the education of children in their care is delegated to them by the parents of the children. Parents should continue to be involved in the education of their children because parent's involvement is an essential element in the success of a child's progress and development. .
- My leadership is directed at sharing a vision of the necessary and also the desirable or possible directions in which the organisation or department will develop. I accept a special responsibility to establish and promote a relevant vision, to include others in the process, and to lead with enthusiasm, energy, respect for all, and optimism in our capacity to achieve excellence.
- When my management of the school is effective, it will enable teachers to give quality time to children in classrooms, and children to grow in keeping with their needs abilities and interests.
- Schools are for children and are about people working together to achieve the best outcomes for the students. That achievement will depend significantly on harmonious relationships, quality information, broadly based consultation, and sensible power sharing.
- Documented policies and management practices will empower people to get on with things in positive ways, and will also serve as a check against excess or misdirection.
- A school is a dynamic, sometimes volatile environment. Role definitions need to be clear. For example, the governance role of the Board of Trustees and the professional leadership of the Principal need sensitive and ongoing accommodation. Goodwill and shared commitment desired goals must be supported by openness, honesty and understanding of the varied roles in the overall scheme. First class communication is the prerequisite.
- Collaborative management is my intention. This depends on well-negotiated and effective structures. Then, power sharing can become a reality. The school can draw on the strengths of its teachers and community, and can address development needs because of those strengths.
- A stimulating and relevant curriculum will include sensitive, ongoing monitoring of pupil progress, adjusted directions as an outcome, and reporting of quality to those with the need and right to know about student and school achievement.
- All these considerations lead to personal and collective empowerment. Each teacher, for example, accepts a leadership role. The participation of parents is real and significant. My overall professional leadership must be sensitive to individual differences and to providing a range of opportunities for participation and development for individuals, groups and the school as a whole.
Science & Technology
My enthusiasm for science stems from a curiosity to understand how and why things work. I use inquiry approaches to learning as a teaching tool. I was involved in the Science Contract Teacher Development in 1995 and had two units of work that I wrote published. In 1997 I participated in a course which provided an introduction to technology and an examination of the contents and intentions of the new technology curriculum.
ICT -Computer Skills / Information Technology Practitioner.
I have been involved with and interested in computers since the mid 1980's. While working at Underwood Engineering a computer package had been purchased from an accounting viewpoint and I was instrumentaI in using it to improve the MRP system of inventory control and production planning.
Children in my class use word processing and publishing hardware/software to compose and present work. I have used electronic messaging as part of my written language programme. I use spreadsheet software to facilitate problem solving and produce graphs in my mathematics programme.
I have supported students of other classes who were sent to me for guidance and assistance in the use of spreadsheets. I provide opportunities from time to time for children to use the fax and telephone as a tool to source information. I have used audio-conferencing in my classes. I have used computer on-line chat facilities to arrange a field trip.
I have supervised and tutored students during lunchtimes and after school as they prepared for the Waikato Asphalt Computers in Education Awards in 1994 and 1995. In 1995 the Deanwell entries won awards.
At the end of December 1994 I set up a FidoNet electronic mail point for Deanwell School. We registered as members of K12Net in January 1995. Children from the school engaged in cross-curriculum projects on K12Net. They had to research local information to share and have found out things about other participants and the areas where they live. In December 1995 I began to send mail through a gate to the Internet and receive educational usegroup conferences. In January 1996 I set up a small network of 5 computers to make access to the mailpoint easier for children.
I was asked by Waikato Computers in Education Society to present a workshop for teachers about K12Net in June 1995.
At Matiere and Manawaru I set up my Mailpoint as an online Bulletin Board which was accessed by students out of school hours.
At Matamata Christian School, I assisted in the technical aspects of making their network functional. I developed the ICT plans. I set up Internet and e-mail access. I developed a school website that can be browsed at http://www.matamata.school.nz/. I was responsible for administering the network (UTP network with NT4 Server supporting 18 workstations running Windows 95) and providing support for its users. I have run in-service staff development meetings for colleagues in the use of software for personal, professional and classroom use. Students in my class were involved in international projects with students in overseas schools. The class website is was http://www.matamata.school.nz/room3/. One international project was called Schoolyard Animals Around the World. In addition to the research and publishing associated with the project, my students engaged in realtime online chat with students in the United States as well as email interaction.
At Waitomo Caves School we contributed to the Netguide competition in 2001 and the Global Virtul Clasrrom project in 2003. Our collaborative entry made it to the final judging stage and we were ackowledged for academic content. The 2004 Entry won second prize
Spare time is frequently taken up with fixing the computers of acquaintances or troubleshooting and helping friends in the operation of their computers and software.

Language
While I use a whole language process approach to writing, I am knowledgeable about and include grammar and technical information in the appropriate contexts in my teaching.
I use a mixture of approaches to in the teaching of reading, combining elements of whole language and phonics while challenging students to demand meaning and understanding from the text.
The visual language strand gives opportunity to explore different media and genre in ways that appeal to less academic students and can be a means to enhance ability and progress in the other two strands.
In 1996 I attended a three-day English contract for Principals in the Central King Country. I attended a writing workshop with Harry Hood in 1997. .Mathematics

I believe the main aim of social studies is to help children be at ease with and to appreciate individual and cultural difference. To this end I like to use an inquiry approach to develop in children a sympathetic and valid understanding of their own and other peoples way of life.
